The Calm Before the Storm

Fall is a time of year that many look forward to. Tailgates, Football, pumpkin spice lattes. Not to mention the routine comfort in the structured school day for our kids. Yet Fall is often a time that many parents get complacent with their school concerns. Many are thrilled that the new year brings a kind of reset to past troubles with behavior or academics. It's always exciting to have fresh eyes looking at your child, ripe with opportunity and possibility. However, what is not always as thoughtfully considered is that these teachers are just getting to know your child and many of the previous year's concerns may still be present, but camouflaged. Further, how do you really know that the program that was designed by last year's team is working or still applicable? Now is the time, before behavior or academic struggles manifest, to check in with the school team to talk about, address, and tweak programs and supports. Don't assume things are going well. Send emails. Have lunch with your child. Review the Google Classroom or Class Syllabus. Talk to your child about their day. Review homework and classwork.
